While CCUS technologies have shown promise in the lab and pilot projects, The challenge is to make CCUS technologies economically viable and deployable at a scale that can have a substantial impact. 

 

While CCUS systems are currently quite prohibitively costly to set up at scale, scaling them up presents considerable concerns. Due to the technology’s high infrastructure and energy needs. Large-scale CCUS project development also necessitates significant funding and cooperation between governments, business, and other stakeholders.

A substantial amount of greenhouse gas emissions is caused by industries including steel, aviation, chemicals, and cement; therefore, reducing these industries’ emissions is essential to meet climate goals. 

Capturing and reusing CO2 emissions can contribute to the development of a circular economy and lower the overall carbon footprint of these sectors.

Achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 will depend heavily on CCUS in order to achieve the Paris Agreement’s aim of keeping global warming to far below 2°C above pre-industrial levels. 

In the run-up to COP 28 Governments, business, and civil society have to work together in a coordinated effort to hasten the adoption of CCUS technology. 

Governments can play a significant role in promoting the adoption of CCUS technology by investing in R&D, providing regulatory frameworks that support its implementation, providing adequate funding and incentives, and ensuring public acceptance. By working together, we can build a sustainable future.

So you have removals, but how are they verified? Methodological quantification of the real impacts of CCUS technologies is now a prerequisite for accessing finance opportunities. Permanence, reversal, environmental and the social impacts of CCUS technologies are subject to robust standards with compliance required for the deployment and scale-up of CCUS.​ ​

Dr. Yousef Alhorr

Chairman

Dr. Yousef M. Alhorr is an energy expert, environmentalist and inventor known for his work in sustainable built environments and climate actions. He is the Founding Chairman of the Gulf Organisation for Research and Development (GORD), where he is leading R&D activities in areas related to energy and water efficiency and sustainable building materials. He led the development of the Global Sustainability Assessment System (GSAS) – MENA’s first performance-based green buildings system for assessing buildings and infrastructure projects. In 2016, Dr. Alhorr established the Global Carbon Council – MENA’s first and one of the 8 international voluntary carbon offsetting programs approved by ICAO’s CORSIA and ICROA to support GHG reduction projects and leverage climate change mitigation finance globally. Dr. Alhorr has provided strategic guidance on sustainable development of iconic green projects including all the stadiums prepared to host the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022. He helped draft the first version of Section 7 entitled Green Construction of Qatar Constructions Specifications (QCS) that sets forth the building codes and energy performance parameters to be followed by the industry. Dr. Alhorr is the recipient of AEE’s Energy Innovator of the Year 2022 award. He is also the Founding Chairman of Global Accreditation Bureau, and the President of Green Building Committee at the GCC Standardization Organization (GSO).

Member of the Board of Trustees Former Minister of Energy and Industry -State of Qatar & Former CEO Qatar Energy (Formerly known as Qatar Petroleum)

His Excellency, Dr. Mohammed Bin Saleh Al-Sada has played an instrumental role in the State of Qatar’s transformation into one of world’s largest exporters of gas during a career spanning over 35 years. H.E. was Minister of Energy and Industry and Chairman of the Board of Qatar Petroleum (QP) from 2011 to 2018. H.E. was also Managing Director of QP from 2011 to 2014 and Minister of State for Energy and Industry Affairs and Member of the Cabinet from 2007 to 2011. An active member of the Qatari community, H.E. is the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the University of Doha for Science and Technology and Chairman of the Joint Advisory Board (JAB) at Texas A&M University Qatar (TAMUQ) . H.E. is also Member of the Advisory Board of GCC Supreme Council. H.E. holds an MSc degree and a PhD from the University of Manchester in the UK and a BSc degree in Marine Science and Geology from Qatar University.

Braulio Pikman

Mr. Pikman with more than 35 years’ experience and as an ERM (Environmental Resources Management) Expert Advisor (since 2008) Mr. Pikman has been providing Climate Change technical and advisory services for companies in the public and private sectors (petroleum and petrochemical, metal and mining, steel mills, renewable energy and power generation, biofuels and biomass, financial sector, agribusiness, and national governments among others). Focus on methodological approaches on integrating energy transition aspects, product sustainability (LCA) and climate resilience considerations in defining corporate and national strategies and actions in short- and long-term perspectives. Mr. Pikman works as a member of the Steering and regulatory Committees of the GCC – Global Carbon Council since 2022, as expert reviewer of national inventories for UNFCCC (nominated by the Brazilian Government) since 2016 and as a member of the UNFCCC - CDM Methodologies Panel since 2005. He is part of the WBCSD (World Business Council for Sustainable Development) Technical Working Group on the Greenhouse Gas Protocol guidance on Land Sector Removals Guidance and the Advisory Committee on Avoided Emissions Guidelines.

Prof. Mohammad Abu Zahra

Head of MENA Region

Prof. Mohammad Abu Zahra joined the Global CCS Institute in January 2022 as Head of Middle East North Africa (MENA) region, bringing 18 years of deep experience and international expertise in the Carbon Capture field. Prof. Abu Zahra is also an experienced university professor and a current member of the UN Council of Engineers for Energy Transition (CEET). Previous responsibilities included the management of projects in carbon dioxide capture and CCS integrated systems, consultancy, chemical engineering, and process design. Prior to joining the Institute, Prof. Abu Zahra worked as a professor and CO2 capture research leader at Masdar Institute and Khalifa University (2011-2022). He worked at the International Energy Agency Greenhouse Gas R&D Programme (IEAGHG) as a project manager for the carbon capture and integrated energy systems team.

Robin Tan

Business Opportunity Manager - Decarbonization

Robin Tan is currently the Business Opportunity Manager - Decarbonisation based in Doha where he will be leading the strategic decarbonisation activities in Pearl Gas-To-Liquid plant with a strong focus on Carbon Capture and Storage in collaboration with QatarEnergy to support State of Qatar sustainability and climate ambitions. Robin was also instrumental in developing the carbon strategy for Shell’s GTL Business. Robin has more than 15 years of business experience in the energy sector working across the oil and gas value chain from Exploration, Gas-To-Liquids (GTL), LNG and Petrochemicals in Middle East, Europe and Asia.

Javier is a core member of the Energy, Climate & Sustainability practices at Boston Consulting Group where he works with clients in the energy sector to develop clean energy strategies, sector reform, transactions (IPO, spin-off, debt raising) and innovation. A Scientist by training (PhD in Chemistry) and MBA (AIM, Philippines) she has more than 2 decades of multi-sectoral experience across refining & petrochemicals, renewables (Biofuels), R&D, International Advisory, advocacy to achieve a structured impact across business functions. A Governing Council Member CBEII, National Task Force Member SAF Roadmap in India, Member India US Biofuels Task Force, National Task Force Member CCUS towards Steel Decarbonization, Co-Chair CII Bioenergy Sub-Committee, Member USISPF Indo-US Biofuels Task Force; Member India Chemical Council; Member AMCHAM Aviation Committee, Dr. Jain represents on leading industry forums. Nabil Al-Bulushi

CCUS manager

Nabil Al-Bulushi is currently the Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storge (CCUS) manager at Petroleum development Oman (PDO). He is also the corporate function head of petrophysics and Geomechanics. Nabil has around 20 years of industry experience, including Schlumberger Oilfield Services (Currently SLB), PDO, Shell International, and Saudi Aramco. During this time, he has held various positions including field engineer, petroleum engineering specialist, and discipline leads. His experience span from EOR spectrum (including Thermal, chemical and Co2 injection), unconventional exploration, R&D and Merging and Acquisition (M&A). Nabil has a master’s in petroleum engineering and PhD in artificial Intelligence from Imperial College London. And he is also a Visiting Lecturer at Imperial College London since 2012.

Gagan Porrwal

Gagan heads the International Markets Partnerships organization accountable for developing partnerships around transport and storage of Carbon and Hydrogen, CCS and hydrogen system integration, relevant technology providers and carbon monetization. Building an eco-system of partners that enable , accelerate and drives penetration of CCUS and Hydrogen in Power Generation applications across various sectors in the geographies of Europe, Middle East, Asia , Australia and Africa . Having spent multiple years working in climate tech, Gagan is passionate about building the perfect intersection for product innovation, commercialization and climate impact to accelerate the need for technology deployment tackling climate challenge. In his prior roles, he has held various positions across Commercial, Engineering , GE’s Corporate Audit Staff and Operations - over the span of 17 years working with GE business segments across global geographies.

Dr. Juman Al Saqlawi

OQAE head of decarbonization

Juman Al-Saqlawi is the Head of Decarbonisation at OQ, Oman’s integrated energy company, and is a member of OQ’s Alternative Energy team. Juman graduated from the University of Cambridge with a BA and MEng degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering. She has 13 years of experience in project management, construction and research in the energy transition, including CCUS. Juman holds a PhD from Imperial College London and has multiple publications relating to the transition to a low carbon economy.

Travis is responsible for developing registries to certify the clean economy at Evident. He oversaw the development of registries for renewables and low-methane natural gas before co-founding the carbon removal standard, C-Capsule. Before starting his career, Travis graduated from University College London with a bachelor’s degree in Geography.

Leo Chi Wai Tong defines and orchestrates the Sustainability agenda across QNB Group, which has been externally recognised through pioneering sustainable finance activities, award winning ESG initiatives, and top ESG ratings in the region. With almost two decades of experience as a banking and strategy consulting professional, he has delivered strategic change and transformation across Financial Services, UK Government, FTSE 100 and Fortune 500 companies. Leo also holds BSc (Hons) and MSc from Imperial College London, Yale Executive Education, and Associateship of the Royal College of Science.

Sarabeth B. Brockley

Lead Advisor, Carbon Markets & ESG

Sarabeth B. Brockley is a professional with over 12 years of experience in corporate sustainability strategy, international development, and ESG consulting. She is a recognized expert in Carbon Strategy and CDR, advising corporates along the carbon removal procurement process and furthers initiatives to address gaps in shaping a global ecosystem approach to carbon management within the VCM. Currently, Sarabeth serves as the Lead Advisor for Carbon Strategy and ESG at Nasdaq, where she manages a team of analysts providing guidance for ESG capital deployment strategies and investor outreach to 4,000+ corporate clients worldwide. As a senior advisor to management teams and boards on establishing foundational ESG programs and strengthening mature ESG programs, Sarabeth has also played a crucial role in developing programs, policies, and strategies to attract long term capital. She is a key speaker at events such as COP27, COP15, Verge, and SXSW and represents Nasdaq on the global stage. Prior to joining Nasdaq, Sarabeth held various Senior Consultant positions at the United Nations, K2 Integrity, Stockholm International Water Institute, Business for Social Responsibility and the World Bank. Her experience includes ecosystem mapping, product innovation, and early stage start-ups. She sits on various boards including ParaCliffhangers and Women and Climate and is a RPCV having served in Peru (2011-2013).

Kishor Rajhansa

Chief Operating Officer

Kishor Rajhansa is a climate change, energy, and sustainability leader with a professional experience of 27 years at leadership positions in multi-national advisory, international regulatory and government organizations. Currently, Kishor is working as Chief Operations Officer at Global Carbon Council (GCC), Doha, Qatar. He is primarily responsible for designing and operationalizing the Global Carbon Council, a CORSIA and ICROA approved global voluntary carbon market that is first ever from MENA region. He holds bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering as well as degree of Masters of Technology in Energy Management and MBA in Finance. He is a certified expert in climate and renewable energy finance from Frankfurt school of finance and management. He is the acting member of expert panel developing climate mitigation standards of UNFCCC (CDM Methodologies Panel). Prior to taking current role at GCC, he worked for 10 years at United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), Germany as Team Leader and Project Manager of Standards Setting Unit. In earlier years to that he served a lead agency of India-European Commission Energy Cooperation Programme as Energy Engineer and Ernst & Young as Manager, offering the services on energy management, climate change and sustainability

Wafic is the Government Affairs Lead for Microsoft Qatar since 2021 and leads the policy strategy in areas related to cybersecurity, privacy, artificial intelligence, and environmental sustainability. In his role, Wafic is committed to spearheading the organization's sustainability plan and initiatives ensuring a greener, more sustainable future for the company and the entire region. Wafic is an avid advocate for environmental education and community engagement. Before that, Wafic worked for 13 years in Qatar between Deloitte and EY to advise and consult clients in business/digital transformation, performance improvement, and stakeholder engagement across the Middle East in diverse business functions and industries. Wafic holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from the American University of Beirut, and has an Executive MBA from HEC Paris focused on Digital Transformation in three different locations Doha, Paris, and San Francisco.

Svenja Telle

Director of Origination

Svenja is Director of Origination at Base Carbon, advancing project opportunities from concept to execution in a cross-vertical approach. She oversees community engagement strategies and co-benefit monitoring in project origination, selection, diligence, financial structuring, and registration. Her focus also includes scaling emerging carbon removal technologies. Svenja also serves as a Climate Change Policy expert to the UNFCCC and carbon removal policy expert to the Kingdom of Bahrain. As a former Director at a Direct Air Capture startup and analyst at PitchBook, she contributed to extensive financial research covering carbon value chains, carbon utilization, and ESG. She further holds a doctoral research fellowship at the Gund Institute for Environment and served as a climate policy advisor at the United Nations HQ where she gained deep insight into carbon markets and regulatory processes.

Dr Hooman Haghighi

Global Energy Transition Manager

Dr Hooman Haghighi has around two decades of industrial and research experience in providing consulting services to the energy and energy transition industries and is a Global Energy Transition Manager at Wood. He has a PhD in petroleum engineering and is the Subject Matter Expert for CO2 and Hydrogen Transport, Storage and Flow Assurance. He has been heavily involved with different major H2 and CCS industrial and research projects worldwide and also in management, operations, strategy and complex dynamic process engineering across multiple industry sectors. He is the first or co-author on over 35 refereed journals, conference publications and international book chapters, primarily concerning CCS, Hydrogen (and Hydrogen Blended with Natural Gas systems), flow assurance, and fluid phase behavior.

Ahmed Osman

Regional Business Development Manager​

Ahmed Osman is the Regional Business Development Manager for Equinor in the Middle East. He is responsible for Equinor’s commercial and business development activities in the region. He is based in Doha, Qatar since 2020. Ahmed has 20 years of experience in the energy industry, and has worked in Egypt, Qatar, USA and the UK. His previous roles included managing the HSE and Regulatory Affairs team in Egypt and afterwards in Alaska. After moving to Houston in 2013, he was a project manager for business development projects in the US, Canada, and Mexico. Before joining Equinor in 2008, Ahmed was heading the HSE department for British Gas in Egypt. Ahmed’s core expertise is in sustainability, strategy, portfolio analysis, commercial and business development. Ahmed holds a MSc in Chemical Engineering from Cairo University and completed executive courses in Harvard and Oxford universities.

Prior joining Aramco in 2014, Dr. Ahmed served as a research professor and faculty at Michigan Technological University, and prior to that he worked as Environmental engineering consultant. His area of expertise includes mass transfer operation and its applications to CCS and water technologies.

Elham Kolahchian

Subsurface Lead

Elham Kolahchian leads 44.01’s subsurface team. Elham has over a decade of international experience in reservoir characterization and well construction. At 44.01 she manages design and execution of subsurface structure, as well as developing monitoring and verification plans for the mineralisation process.

Denis Borodenok

Regional Director

Denis Borodenok, GaffneyCline, Regional Director, Middle East, based in Dubai. Denis has over 19 years of solid executive experience in Industrial and Energy markets, including decarbonization of industry (roadmaps, technology consulting, new energy technologies, greenhouse gas emissions management), CCUS surface to sub-surface, Reservoir screening to certification, CO2 injection, EOR/EGR, Hydrogen technologies, Energy Efficiency and Energy Storage, as well commercial aspects and market strategy assessment. He led the Energy Transition initiatives in Baker Hughes, he was Chief Commercial Officer in BP downstream business, advised Managing Partner in EY (Ernst & Young) on Industrial, Energy and Go-to-market strategy, as well as worked for Alcoa and Mitsubishi Corporation in commodity trading.

Carbon Engineering (CE) has developed Direct Air Capture (DAC) technology at megatonne scale. Amy is responsible for building CE’s business across the UK, Europe and the Middle East. Eberhart Wusterhaus Gomez

An engineer by profession, the company’s Commercial Director, Eberhart specialises in understanding the global vision of the CCUS industry. He has a degree in Mechanical Engineering and Mechatronics having specialised in CO2 generation and energy production from conventional and renewable sources. With more than 15 years of experience across environmental services globally, Eberhart has a history within sales and engineering. Prior to joining Carbon Clean, he worked at Viessmann Group focussing on business development for the renewable gas division. He is skilled in process engineering, industrial gas separation and carbon capture. Eberhart joined Carbon Clean in 2016 and is responsible for sales and business development within the EMEA region assisting the company’s ambition to deliver climate action and capture 1 billion tonnes of CO2 by 2035.

Dr Malcolm Cook

Senior Vice President

Dr Malcolm Cook holds a degree and doctorate in Chemistry from the University of Strathclyde in Scotland. He was then awarded a 2 year NATO Postdoctoral Fellowship for fundamental research in catalysts at the Technical University of Munich, Germany. After joining industry, Malcolm lead the research & development for coatings for ChlorAlkali & water electrolysis before moving into technical service, commissioning, sales and business development. He now heads up the Business Development and Sales team for thyssenkrupp Uhde & nucera across all of their technologies in the Middle East & Turkey and has been in the GCC for the past 14 years. He led the successful Business Development activities for the QAFCO 7 Blue ammonia plant at Mesaieed which is currently under execution.

Ghaith Al Jazzar

Mr. Aljazzar is the Regional Director of Business Development & Strategy responsible for the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. He is responsible for business development activities for Fluor Energy Solutions and Urban Solutions Business Groups. Mr. Aljazzar is currently based in Fluor’s Al Khobar office in Saudi Arabia. With 17 years of Fluor service in business development and process engineering roles, Mr. Aljazzar has held positions in Al Khobar (KSA), Greenville (SC, USA), Southern California (CA, USA), and various project locations. Mr. Aljazzar has over 6 years of business development experience in the United States and the Middle East region including Oil & Gas, Power, and Mining & Metals sectors. Prior to his current role, Mr. Aljazzar was a Senior Process Engineer based in Fluor’ Southern California Office. He has 10 years of experience in process engineering covering all phases of design work with a focus on Middle East and North Slope gas processing projects including two multi-billion-dollar sour gas facilities in Abu Dhabi, UAE. His process engineering experience was also focused on developing and promoting Fluor’s gas processing, sulfur, and carbon capture technologies. Mr. Aljazzar is a graduate of University of California, Irvine with a M.S. and B.S. in Chemical Engineering. He is also a graduate of Chapman University with an Executive MBA.

Mohammed A. Al-Habib

Mohammed A. Al-Habib was appointed as the Regional Executive Director Energy Transition - for Baker Hughes in June 2021. In his current role, Mohammed will lead the company strategy for our new growth areas to drive a low-carbon future with our customers across the region. He will also play a critical role in identifying partnership and commercial opportunities with key accounts. Mohammed has a proven track record of leading long-term business relationships with key regional customers in the energy and industrial sectors. His strong winning attitude and distinguished skill set are assets that will match our corporate vision to as we continue to position ourselves for new frontiers. Mohammed joined the company 12 years ago. He did a one-year assignment with Turbomachinery & Process Solutions (TPS) in Florence, Italy working on fleet upgrade engineering and strategic marketing. He then moved to the role of the TPS Services Sales Leader for Saudi Arabia and Bahrain. Prior to this role, Mohammed was leading the Downstream Account for Saudi Arabia, where he managed Baker Hughes long-term strategic partnership with SABIC, positioning the company’s portfolio with Saudi Aramco and leading different strategic initiatives in country. As Head of the Foreign Representative Office of Germany’s largest state (Bavaria) in the U.S. and a senior investment & trade official, he has supported more than $3B in bilateral economic value creation between the E.U. and the U.S. His work has been featured in Inc. Magazine, Forbes, TechCrunch, CHIP, VC publications, and multinational firms like BMW. His 12+ years of international experience includes digital product management, EV sharing/charging and energy storage pilots, strategic M&A/corporate development, climate & energy policy research at think tanks, and major renewables and transport infrastructure projects in EMEA, LATAM, and Central Asia. Paul Zakkour

Director at Carbon Counts

Paul Zakkour is well-known for his seminal work on the design and integration of carbon geostorage into EU and UN climate policy and carbon pricing mechanisms more than a decade ago. His more recent work is focussed on the policy environment for negative emissions, carbon removals, beneficial uses of CO2 and the treatment of sink enhancements under the Paris Agreement. Paul also has broad experience in climate policy across Europe, Asia-Pacific, North America, Middle East and Africa, including the design and implementation of carbon pricing programmes, nationally determined contributions (NDCs)and long-term low emissions development strategies (LT-LEDS). Paul has been a Consulting Director at Carbon Counts for more than 14-years, prior to which he spent over six years as a Principal Consultant with ERM’s Energy & Climate Change Practice in London. Paul holds a PhD in environmental technology from Imperial College London, and lives and works in the Frankfurt am Main region.

Nathan Smith

Nathan has 25 years’ experience in the process industries, primarily in Engineering Management and Decarbonization Technology deployment. Nathan’s management experience includes both Location based (corporate) and project specific Engineering Management responsibilities. Nathan’s corporate experience includes the day-to-day management of a 260 strong engineering team while his project-based experience covers FEL1/2A/2B and 3 phases. Nathan currently acts as the Technical Director to Worley’s Middle Eastern business. In this role Nathan advises the business and its customer base on the decarbonization of the process industries through integration of CCUS and new energy production techniques. Nathan is a hydrocarbons Subject Matter Expert (SME) with deep knowledge of natural gas and natural gas liquid (NGL) conditioning including the process design and specification of gas sweetening, dehydration, mercury removal and dew point control packages (DPCUs) and optimisation of NGL fractionation plants. Nathan is a decarbonization Subject Matter Expert (SME) with deep knowledge of carbon capture techniques, energy efficiency methods, emissions abatement and most strongly, the production of new energy via blue and green technology routes. Nathan is a true global consultant having executed most of his projects in Southeast Asia, the Pacific, the GCC (KSA, UAE, Kuwait) and North America (Houston).

Carl Clayton

Carl Clayton is a core member of Boston Consulting Group's Energy, and Climate & Sustainability practices focused primarily on supporting clients’ strategic transformations within energy transition and global decarbonization. Carl has deep expertise in low carbon solutions, covering carbon capture and storage (CCS), bioenergy, biofuels, carbon removal, and hydrogen and derivatives. Since joining BCG, Carl has worked extensively advising clients on large cross-sector climate and energy related transformations including many major corporations, energy companies, and private equity and financial institutions. He works at the intersection of science, technology, business, and finance, on a wide range of strategic and transformational challenges. Prior to moving into consulting Carl had over 16 years of industrial experience in various engineering, management, and strategic development positions. He is also a Chartered Engineer.

Kikuko Shinchi

Kikuko has 15 years of experience working on carbon credit generation through multilateral (CDM) and bilateral (JCM) schemes, climate finance and supporting low-carbon and adaptation business development globally. She has supported CCUS project development in ASEAN countries through engaging in policy dialogue with government officials and exploring carbon market opportunities. She has also supported private companies in developing strategies for CCUS deployment. Before joining Mitsubishi Research Institute in 2020, she worked as a senior consultant in Environmental Strategy Division of Mitsubishi UFJ Morgan Stanley Securities. B.A. in Anthropology with specialization in Urban Studies, University of California, Los Angeles.

Abdullah Al Harthy

Abdullah Al Harthy is the Founder and Executive Chairman of Birba. He brings decades of experience in the energy sector having previously held the position of Executive Director at Weatherford Oman - a company that produces innovative energy solutions that are enviornmentally and economically sustainable - as well as stints with Oman Gas Company and with Oman Shell in supply chain management. Abdullah brings specific, localised knowledge to our steering committee and has in-depth knowledge of the advancements and opportunities that exist within Oman's energy sector. He has also held the position of Executive Direction of Corporate Communications with OPAL - the Oman Society of Petroleum Engineers. Abdullah holds a Master's Degree in Business and Administration from the University of Hull and a Bachelor's in Mechanical and Production Engineering from the University of South Wales.

Dr. Ammar Elhoweris

Dr. Ammar is the Head of Technology and Innovation at the Gulf Organisation of Research and Development, having previously headed up their Materials Group and Technohub Facilities. He has over 10 years of research exeperience related to sustainability and low-carbon technologies and has previously been responsible for identifying research opportunites that ailgn with Qatar's Vision 2030 sustainability and economic diversification objectives. While undergoing a PhD in Materials Chemistry from the University of Aberdeen, Dr. Ammar was part of a project that developed a process for the production of calcium sulfoaluminate cement; a novel process that is intended to be developed for eventual commercial production in Doha, Qatar. He also holds a Master's Degree in Enviornmental and Waste Management from the University of West Scotland.

Prof. Anna Skorek-Osikowska

Prof. Anna Skorek-Osikowska on the Faculty of Energy and Environmental Engineering, Department of Power Engineering and Turbomachinery at the Silesian University of Technology, Poland. Her research interests include modeling and simulation of power generation technologies and systems, techno-economic analysis, energy storage, production of renewable fuels, carbon dioxide capture and utilization, negative emissions technologies, prospective analysis of energy generation systems, distributed energy systems and district heating systems. She has participated in, and coordinated, many international and national research projects. She also actively collaborates with industry. She is an author or co-author of more than 130 research articles published in peer-reviewed journals and in conference proceedings. She is the Action Chair of the TrANsMIT Cost Action 21227, a pan-European networking project Techno-economic analysis of carbon mitigation technologies. Recently, she has been awarded a Fulbright STEM Impact Award, involving a research stay at Princeton University, USA. Previously, she was a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Action Fellow at the IMDEA Energy Research Institute in Spain. She holds degrees in environmental engineering and power engineering from Silesian University of Technology (MSc, PhD, habilitation) and Danish Technical University (MSc).

Dr Jose-Luis Galvez -Martos

Senior Assistant Researcher

Dr Galvez-Martos is senior assistant researcher of IMDEA Energy (Spain) specialised on the assessment and optimisation of the environmental performance of processes and products. His focus is the life cycle and technoeconomic assessment of energy and energy-related aspects of production systems (e.g., renewable fuels, carbon capture, hydrogen, thermodynamic equilibrium modelling, process simulation), and on the sustainability of novel approaches and best practice of materials and construction practices. In recent years, he has focused his work on the assessment of the role of Waste-to-Energy technologies in the Circular Economy, on the production of hydrogen, biofuels and solar fuels, batteries and in projects related to construction materials based on Carbon Capture and Utilisation and the decarbonisation of the cement industry. He has several years of scientific experience working for the European Commission, the University of Aberdeen, the Spanish Institute for Aerospace Technology, the Complutense University of Madrid and IMDEA Energy. He is the author of 45 peer-reviewed journal papers, has produced several relevant reports for the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre and is the named inventor of two patent applications on carbon capture and utilization. He is currently co-chairing the working group 5 “Life Cycle Thinking in CCUS” of the COST Action “Transmit”, and also co-chairs working group 4 “Pre-processing, Separation, and Environmental considerations” of RILEM Technical Committee “Upcycling Powder Mineral Wastes into Cement Matrices”.

Prof. Abdelghafour Zaabout

Prof. Abdelghafour Zaabout is an Associate Professor at University Mohamed 6 Polytechnic (UM6P) and coordinator of the Chair CaNCUS (Carbon Negative, Capture, Utilisation & Sequestration) created to promote CCUS in Morocco and Africa. He has 14 years of expertise in CCUS, developing highly efficient and cost-effective technologies for decarbonization of the industrial, energy, and hydrogen sectors. Prior to joining UM6P, he worked jointly as a Senior Scientist at SINTEF Industry in Norway, and as an affiliate Prof. at UM6P. He received his Ph.D. from Aix Marseille University before starting a two-year Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Eindhoven University of Technology. Throughout the last decade, he served as a key driver in the demonstration of several CO2 capture and hydrogen production technologies both at lab and pilot scales, where his role varied from implementer to WP and project leader in the framework of different Norwegian, EU funded, and direct industrial projects. His activities covered various low-carbon technologies (e.g., chemical looping for power, hydrogen production, and chemical, adsorption, cryogenic, mineralization, and pyrolysis). Prof. Zaabout co-authored nearly 50 peer-reviewed journal papers & several patents and co-supervised dozens of students combining Ph.D. students, postdocs, and graduates. He participated as a panelist at COP27 in Sharm El Sheikh in a UN official session on CCUS for Africa, and he chaired key sessions in several international conferences (e.g., GHGT 16, Int. Conference on Fluidization).

Methodologies Manager

Julieta Nikova is a climate change, chemicals and sustainability expert currently working as the Methodologies Manager at the Global Carbon Council, Doha, where she develops robust and scientifically sound baseline and monitoring methodologies for quantification of GHG emission reductions applicable to various mitigation technologies and measures. She is an acting member of the Socio-Economic Analysis Committee for the European Chemicals Agency, supporting the agency on topics related to the socio-economic impacts of potential legislation on chemicals. Previously, Julieta worked with the Standards Setting Unit and Small-Scale Methodologies team at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in Germany. She also worked with multiple government bodies in Bulgaria implementing legislation for the sustainable management of chemicals and the EU Emission trading scheme, assessing Joint Implementation projects and elaborating GHG inventories, climate change action plans and strategies. She also has valuable experience in the private sector working on environmental protection projects for oil and gas exploration and production. Julieta holds a master’s degree in Environmental Engineering and a bachelor’s degree with two majors in Biotechnology and in Ecology and Environmental Protection.

Chris is Project Delivery Lead for Worley’s Global CCUS Growth Unit. He joined Worley in 2018, but his career in CCUS began 14 years ago. Before Worley, he was a Project Manager for a Post-Combustion CO2 Capture Pilot Plant in Scotland. And then Process Technology Development Manager, supporting the design, build, and operation of a 100+ tonnes per day demonstration plant in West Yorkshire, UK. Chris works with our CCUS project teams, regional leaders, and project delivery groups supporting the delivery of ongoing projects and key pursuits in the CCUS space. He is a business leader with 18 years’ work experience, mainly in large energy industry project management. He has proven his ability to develop organisations that consistently deliver top and bottom-line growth, creates and maintains good customer relationships and is focused on creating development opportunities for his team members.

He boasts a strong background in technology development and applied industrial process integration, design, and optimization, with a focus on CO2 capture and utilization, steam reforming catalysis, and product development. Dr. Amhamed has secured over $15 million in external funding for his research and has a proven track record of generating innovative research ideas and developing successful proposals. Additionally, he has received multiple grants for research and development projects related to carbon management and energy efficiency, including the "CO2 Cluster Project" (NPRP12C-0821-190017), which was awarded the highest grant by the Qatar National Research Fund's National Priorities Research Program Cluster Track (NPRP-C) with a sum of $6.4 million for a five-year duration. Dr. Amhamed is an expert in the technology development using Stage-Gate Processes Technique, has a strong publication record in high-impact journals, and has filed over 14 patent applications. Michelle is the founder of clever carbon. She launched her career in Silicon Valley where she worked for some of the biggest names in tech including Salesforce and DocuSign. A proponent for making sustainability the new norm, Michelle founded clever carbon to help teach people about carbon footprint in a hip, fun, and relatable way. She is a TEDx and SXSW 2022 speaker on the topic of carbon literacy and believes that a carbon literate society is one where transparency and accountability will flourish and one worth striving for. Michelle started Women and Climate, a community for women interested in learning and talking about climate.

Dr. Muftah H. El-Naas

Research Professor Qatar University

Dr. Muftah El-Naas is a professor at the Gas Processing Center, Qatar University, and also served as Director of the Center and QAFCO Chair. His areas of expertise include CO2 capture, water purification, biotechnology, plasma technology, and membrane separation. His recent research work focuses on the development of new, environmentally-friendly processes for the oil and gas industry and he has recently developed a patent-pending bioreactor system for the biodegradation of BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene - compounds that occur naturally in crude oil and can be found in sea water). Dr. El-Naas is a member of the Canadian Society of Chemical Engineers, a member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, and a senior member of the Asia-Pacific Chemical, Biological & Environmental Engineering Society. He is a recipient of several awards including the College of Engineering Merit Award in 2007; the Best Performance Award for excellence in scholarship in 2008 and 2015, and the Asian Education Leadership Award for the years 2013 and 2014. He holds a PhD in Chemical Engineering from McGill University.

Steve Webb

Steve Webb is the Director of International Sequestration for 1PointFive supporting the international roll-out of Direct Air Capture technology, with a focus on geological sequestration of CO2. Steve has a B.S. in Petroleum Engineering and an MBA in Technology Management. Steve has over 35 years of experience in the oil and gas industry of which 15 years involved the reservoir characterization and management of waterflood and CO2 flood projects. Steve is active on SPE Technical Selection committees, has co-authored several SPE papers, and was a co-author of the SPE Monograph, Practical Aspects of CO2 Flooding.

Dara Dotz

Strategic Advisor

Dara Dotz, with her extensive experience in applying emerging and exponential technology around the globe in real-world scenarios, has been called "the MacGyver of tough problems in war zones." Her 15+ years in the field as a Humanitarian Designer "applying Moore's Law's table scraps" to solutions with local communities, refugees, and astronauts gives her unique insight into what works. She has very real-world experience from a macro level (after advising, consulting, and working with the UN, WB, DFID, BCG etc.), while at the same time consistently interfacing with individual victims of disaster, war and poverty. While working in Haiti on earthquake recovery, Dara experienced the urgent need for life saving equipment in shortage, such as medical clamps and oxygen splitters. With the chaos of the environment causing extreme shipping delays, Dara found a solution by obtaining a 3D printer and putting it to functional and life-saving use in Haiti. This was the start of Field Ready, an NGO focused on manufacturing humanitarian supplies in challenging environments across the globe. Field Ready makes essential medical supplies, replacement parts, water pipe fittings, and more. Feeling the need to continually engage herself in challenging but impactful situations, Dara began working as Human Factors Lead for Made In Space, Inc. in 2013. This company built and operated the first gravity-independent 3D printer on the International Space Station. Since then, she has been mentoring and advising a number of space startups, involving advanced manufacturing. During this time, Dara also worked as a Humanitarian lead on several drone projects facilitating access to supplies and search and rescue activities, most notably in the Nepal Earthquake response. Through numerous collaborations and research projects, she has had the opportunity to develop cutting-edge technologies, including the first human and AI-designed car and prosthetics for female veterans. She has also applied novel multipolymer upcycling technologies that utilize ML and AI to stitch together single-use plastics to create emergency housing rapidly. Currently Dara is again engaging the consequences of violence, working with victims of the Blood Diamonds civil war of Sierra Leone. Consulting for MIT as Field Coordinator and Manufacturing Lead, Dara is working to provide cutting edge prosthetic technology to amputee victims of the war. Using MIT-developed prosthetics and working alongside German medical specialists, Dara’s team is in process of applying the newest prosthetic tech in an extremely traditional environment where disabled people are often taboo. This is yet another example of Dara’s work changing and safeguarding the lives of those in danger. Dara is focusing the project on long term sustainability through methodic and intentional training and credentialing of local partners. After its establishment in Sierra Leone, the group intends to apply the model throughout Africa. Work like this does not go unrecognized. The results of Dara’s work and her own passion have led her to speaking engagements at TED, the Wall Street Journal, the UN, Exponential Medicine, Exponential Manufacturing, European Space Policy Institute, and The World Bank Understanding Risk Forum. Featured in Wired, Harvard Business Review, Fast Company, Deloitte, and CNBC, and referenced in books by the likes of Adam Savage. Dara has received numerous accolades, including recognition by the Obama Administration as a "Champion of Change."
